With the launch of the Innovate2030 innovation challenge at COP26, the BMZ and its partners from the UNFCCC and the European Commission bring together innovators from all around the world to combat the mounting pressure of climate change that cities both cause and suffer from.

Digital labor platforms are an important source of income for millions of people worldwide. To promote fair working conditions on these platforms, BMZ supports the “Fairwork Foundation”, an initiative of the Oxford Internet Institute. Together, they have developed a microlearning course that gives anyone interested a better understanding of the gig economy and what it means to be a platform worker. In this interactive game for the e-learning platform Atingi, you can spend a day in the shoes of Lubanzi, a South African rideshare driver.

In cooperation with Stiftung Neue Verantwortung (SNV) a cybersecurity policy exercise took place, involving the private sector, government and civil society. The fictional cyber incident “Kenyleaks” confronted the partcipants with the situation that confidential information about the financial situation, the Kenyan president and citizens was published on the website "Kenyaleaks". The media has been informed about this cyber incident and is reporting on the exercise.

3 months of intensive training have paid off: Three of the 15 Rwandan participants of the AI Fellowship Program are now applying their skills in companies. As a joint project of  FAIR Forward - Artificial Intelligence for All and the IBS Foundation and the Rwandan team of Leapr Labs, the fellowship program has gotten off to a successful start and will go into renewal with a second edition.

KfW Development Bank is actively shaping the digital transformation and thus contributing to achieving the SDGs. With its newly developed digital strategy, it enables data-based work and the networking of data, knowledge and actors. It focuses on three aspects: digital delivery, digital enablement and agenda setting.

Addressing social and environmental challenges with digital innovations: The Innovation Factory Ideation Challenge motivates social entrepreneurs to (further) develop their digital innovations and solutions as part of an incubation program. The ideation challenge aims at start-ups in Ghana, Mexico and Indonesia. The winning teams will receive tailored support adapted to the needs of the start-up. Applications are open now. 

GIZ and IT developer Kinshasa Digital cooperated within the framework of the BMZ's funding programme develoPPP to deploy digital solutions in the DR Congo to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Two newly developed tools for monitoring mobility data and hospital capacities, as well as a data control room with dashboard, help government health institutions plan COVID-19-specific protective measures. To raise public awareness, an information campaign was implemented with the Ministry of Health, reaching more than 7 million people through social and traditional media.

Behind the close collaboration between the World Bank, GIZ and the NGO Smart Africa for the agile regulation for digital transformation learning programme is the conviction that only appropriate regulation can fully exploit the potential of digitalisation for the digital economy as well as for better living conditions. In September, the Smart Africa Digital Academy (SADA) launched the agile regulation learning programme and the associated learning platform. The first webinar dealt with the application of agile regulation principles to properly amplify and guide digital transformation.
