Dear reader, As new Director for Private Sector, Trade, Employment and Digital Technologies at BMZ, I am fascinated by the fast-pace digital for development movement. However, shaping equitable and inclusive digital transformation is not a small undergoing. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2021 listed digital inequality among the greatest risks of the next decade. To illustrate this: A global research on the Digital Quality of Life found that “the world’s worst internet is the least affordable”. Whereas individuals in Europe work 2 hours and 15 minutes on average to pay for the cheapest broadband connection, people in Nigeria need to work 33 hours and 42 minutes. That is almost 15 times as much. This shows that the digital divide remains a pressing issue. In this edition, you can read about BMZ's approach to improving accessibility of core digital building blocks. You can moreover find out how BMZ works with African innovators on making “Artificial Intelligence for All”. I wish you an interesting read, Dr. Tania Rödiger-Vorwerk Director Private Sector, Trade, Employment and Digital Technologies, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) |
